As you embark on any new adventure (whether it's your weight loss journey, a new career, a new training program for a race or a climb, a new fitness regime, etc.), it's so important to establish your WHY?. When the going gets tough (and it will get tough), your WHY? will help drive you. It will PUSH YOU PAST BARRIERS you have built up over the years and become so accustomed to in your life.
You may have heard the saying "Your WHY should make you CRY." This may not always be literal, but the meaning behind it is solid. You should be PASSIONATE about your WHY?. Your WHY? should be so powerful and so motivating that it becomes VISIBLE to others. Let's use "weight loss" as an example.

"I will lose 15 pounds by October."
Would that statement move you to tears? Me neither. It's a great goal; it's specific and has a time limit as well (part of the S.M.A.R.T. goal strategy), but there's no real passion behind it. Let's try this again, shall well?
"Gain freedom from the clutches of food."
Now we're talkin'! If someone told you that they wanted to lose 15 pounds by October so they could gain freedom from the clutches of food, how would that make you FEEL? I would feel their pain immediately (empathy), and if they told me their story it would most likely bring me to
I would encourage you to take the time to GET QUIET. Spend 10 minutes alone (eliminate all distractions) to think about TRULY WHY you want to embark on this journey. How will achieving this goal CHANGE YOUR LIFE? What IMPACT would it have on your family, your friends, and others around you? VISUALIZE the end game and IMAGINE how great it will feel!
Take the time to write down a few things, and keep your WHY? close by. There will come a time when you need some ENCOURAGEMENT, some motivation. That's when you take out your post-it or index card, and you read those beautiful words you wrote to yourself when you felt like you could ACHIEVE THE IMPOSSIBLE. You will be amazed at how powerful those words will be, and what you will be able to accomplish after reading them!
